Just across the road from the cottage, a great place to have cooked English breakfast on the decking overlooking the beach. Fresh ingredients and plenty of home-made cooking on the lunch menu. Sometimes opens for evening meals if there is demand.

Not really that close, but the Waterfront at Totland is the end point of a great 45-minute walk along the coastal path from the cottage, and a perfect spot to watch the setting sun.

Yarmouth

Salty's
Quay Street, Yarmouth 01983 761 550
http://www.saltysrestaurant.co.uk/
The restaurant upstairs specialises in local seafood, the crab and lobster are delivered fresh from the family's fishing boat. Dining at Salty's is always an experience. Downstairs the bar is very popular with visiting yacht crew. The bar is always packed on a Saturday night during the summer, when there is live entertainment.

The Bistro at the George Hotel
Quay Street, Yarmouth 01983 760331

On The Rocks
Bridge Road, Yarmouth  01983 760505
A great stone grill restaurant in the centre of Yarmouth, where you cook the food yourself at the table on volcanic rocks. A lot of the meats and fish on the menu are sourced locally.

Freshwater

The Red Lion
Church Place, Freshwater 01983 754925
Very good dining pub in a very picturesque setting at the end of a lovely hour-long walk up the River Yar. The Red Lion was voted Dining Pub of the year by the Good Food Guide, and is the only pub on the Island to be featured in the Michelin Eating Out in Pubs Guide. Children have to be 10 or over.

Fatima Indian Cuisine
45 School Green Road, Freshwater 01983 755121
Not the prettiest place, either inside or out, but the food is excellent. Does take-away.

Further afield, and special

The Boathouse at Steephill Cove
